30 years ago today, while conducting gunnery exercises off the coast of Puerto Rico, one of Iowa's turrets exploded. 47 members of her crew were killed. Every year, a memorial ceremony is held for them, and this year, I'll be in attendance.

They came to the Navy as strangers. Served the Navy as shipmates and friends and left the Navy as brothers in eternity. - George H.W. Bush

The ceremony was very touching. Dave Canfield, a crewman who was on the ship that day and now VP of the Pacific Battleship Center, spoke movingly about it, and the Governor of Iowa delivered the keynote. Several of the men aboard that day spoke too, as did Lt. Buch's mother.
It was also nice to get back and see the ship and all of my friends there. Jim Pobog took Lord Nelson and me down into the aft AMR, where I previously hadn't been, and I got lots of pictures, so look for another photo post on engineering stuff. There weren't a lot of changes on the main tour route, although Lost at Sea is now open properly, and there were a few tweaks. One of my friends redid the display in the galley, and it looks really cool. Not only is the fake food much better, but the oven now goes on and off on a cycle.
